Can ChatGPT find your vacation rental? Test it properly.

ChatGPT can search the live web, cite sources and use location context. So yes, it can find a vacation rental. The less satisfying answer is that it may not find yours.[1]

That gap matters if you want more guests to reach your own website instead of beginning and ending on an OTA. A Property Passport gives your rental another public, owner-approved route into discovery, with no OpenStays.AI listing fee or booking commission.

Start with a real ChatGPT search

Do not ask one vague question, celebrate one mention and declare victory. Open ChatGPT Search and try three useful prompts:

  1. Search for the property by its exact name and locality.
  2. Ask a factual question only your page answers, such as whether the downstairs bedroom has step-free access.
  3. Ask a non-branded discovery question using genuine fit, such as a dog-friendly cottage near a named beach with an enclosed garden.

Open every citation. Check whether ChatGPT found your official page, an OTA listing, an old directory entry or nothing useful. Search answers can be incomplete, stale or wrong, and OpenAI tells users to inspect the original sources.[1]

A small 2026 industry test shows why one prompt proves little. CraftedStays ran 40 discovery prompts for five US vacation-rental brands. ChatGPT mentioned one of the tested brands in 18 responses, while results differed across the other AI systems.[6] That is an interesting experiment, not a universal benchmark.

Check the crawler that matters

OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search. GPTBot is different: it crawls content that may be used to train foundation models. The controls are independent, so an owner can allow search discovery while blocking GPTBot.[2]

Check your robots.txt file and your hosting or security layer. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot and traffic from its published IP ranges. A change can take about 24 hours to register.[2] This makes crawler access an eligibility check, not a promise that ChatGPT will cite or recommend the rental.

Give it facts worth finding

A crawlable page full of "stunning escape" still leaves the important questions unanswered. Put the useful facts in visible text: capacity, bed layout, accessibility, pet rules, parking, location area, booking terms and the official direct route.

Make one clear page for each rental. Link to it from the rest of your website. Keep names and facts consistent. Google's guidance for its own AI search features supports the same unglamorous foundation: crawl access, index eligibility, internal links, textual content and structured data that agrees with the page.[4]

Measure discovery, not wishful thinking

Repeat a small, fixed prompt set over time, but do not treat it as ranking data. AI answers vary. Watch for real referrals instead. OpenAI says links from ChatGPT search include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help an analytics tool identify visits.[3]

Then keep those visits separate from enquiries and Property Passport publication unless your measurement system joins them into one valid cohort. A mention is not a booking.

Give your rental a clean route into AI search

A Property Passport publishes the facts you approve in readable HTML, Markdown and JSON, then points people towards your chosen direct route. You decide the public location detail. You review the private draft before anything goes live.

Create a free Property Passport, check every fact and publish another route by which ChatGPT can find your rental.
