Vacation rental schema helps machines read your listing. It is not a magic ticket.
One block of code can label your rental's capacity, bed layout, amenities, images and location for machines. That is useful. It is also where the sensible claim ends.
VacationRental schema does not guarantee a rich result, a place in Google Vacation Rentals or a recommendation from ChatGPT. Owners should add structured data for clarity, then judge it as one part of a discoverable direct-booking route.
What VacationRental schema actually does
Schema.org defines VacationRental as a lodging business focused on renting a single property for a limited time.[4] The markup turns ordinary facts into named fields. Instead of making a crawler infer that "sleeps six" means occupancy, the page can state it directly.
Google's supported format can include a stable property identifier, occupancy, beds, bedrooms, bathrooms, amenities, images and location. Google says this data can make eligible listings appear with richer information in Search.[1] JSON-LD is usually the cleanest way to publish it because the code can sit in the page without mangling the visible design.
The useful word is eligible. Valid code gives a machine a better description. It does not purchase attention.
Google Vacation Rentals has another gate
Google's vacation-rental result is an integration, not an open upload box. Its documentation says individual homeowners, peer-to-peer rentals, individual rooms and partial homes are currently ineligible. Professional managers with fewer than 500 properties are directed towards an approved connectivity provider; direct integration is reserved for qualifying managers with at least 500 properties and the required technical capability.[2]
That distinction saves owners from a common mistake: installing a schema plugin and waiting for a Google Vacation Rentals listing to appear. The integration also depends on prices, availability and a working landing page, not static property facts alone.[1][2]
If a programme requires an exact address or live commercial data that you do not want to publish, do not trade away privacy or accuracy for a green validator. Choose the distribution route that fits your business.
Mark up truth, not ambition
Google requires structured data to match the visible page. It warns against hidden, stale, misleading or invented information, including fake reviews.[3] So mark up the pool you have, not the one in next year's renovation plan. Publish a live rate only if your system can keep it live. If a fact changes, update the page and the markup together.
The Rich Results Test can check whether Google understands the code and which rich results it may support.[7] A pass means the syntax works. It does not mean the page will rank or receive special treatment.
Schema is useful for AI discovery, but it is not the whole job
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra technical requirements beyond ordinary Search eligibility. Its AI discovery advice remains practical: allow crawling, use internal links, keep important facts in visible text and make structured data agree with that text.[5]
ChatGPT has its own access control. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used to surface sites in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot controls potential training use. Owners can allow one and block the other.[6] OpenAI does not say that VacationRental schema guarantees a citation or recommendation.
A sound setup is less glamorous than the sales pitches. Give each rental one canonical page. Put useful property facts in readable text. Add truthful structured data where eligible. Link the page from the rest of the site. Keep the official direct route obvious.
Give your rental a public set of facts you control
A Property Passport publishes owner-approved property facts in readable HTML, Markdown and JSON. Eligible Passports can also expose truthful VacationRental JSON-LD. You choose the public location detail, review the private draft and publish only when the facts are right.
Create a free Property Passport and give search engines and AI tools a cleaner route to understand your rental and reach your direct website.
